Somnath Jyotirling is First among the twelve Jyotirling shrines of Lord Shiva and is Holy Pilgrim Tirths of Hindus. Somnath situated on the West Coast of The Republic of India. The Coordinates Measures are 20.8880 Degrees North and 70.4014 Degrees East. It is 403.1 kms far from the well known city of Ahmadabad it took around 7 hours by road to travel from Ahmadabad to Somnath. Somnath a beautiful combination of Natural, marine and Development and the West end of the Indian Mainland. Somnath, it means the “Protector of God Moon God” and it is also known as "the Shrine Eternal" because, having been destroyed many times by the Islamic Kings and Rulers, of which Mahmud Ghaznavi was one who invaded 17 times in India, and tried to destroy the temple many times. The Current structure was built by Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. There are total of 64 Jyotirlingas of which 12 are considered as most auspicious and holy.
Best Time to Visit: The weather here is pleasant through the year, thought summers are warm, yet they are not scorching. The winters are perfect to visit this shrine while the day time of monsoon is idyllic. No matter which season you choose to visit this holy shrine, the place is always a bang for the buck.
The Attractions of Somnath and the Places Nearby:- Shree Gokul Dham Tirth: Shree Gokul Dham Tirth which is also known as Shree Krishna Neejdham Prasthan Tirth or Dehotsarg Tirth, This Temple is a spot where Lord Krishna left his incarnated mortal body. Presently this spot has a beautiful shrine with Gita Mandir (The temple also contains a beautiful tribhangi idol of Lord Krishna playing his flute) and Shree Balaram Gufa from where Elder Brother of Lord Krishna Shree Balaram went to the Netherworld. Balaram was the incarnation of the king of snake – Sheshnag. Tourists make sure to visit this Balaram Gufa (Cave) when they visit Shree Gokul Dham Tirth. This Tirth is Located on the banks of Hiran at a distance of 1.5 Kms from Somnath Temple.
- Shree Bhalka Tirth: This sacred tirth is located on Prabhas Veraval Highway, to the north of Somnath, via Veraval. This spot is the idol of Lord Vasudev Shree Krishna which shows playing his flute. The shrine also has the ancient Peepal tree under which Lord Krishna was meditating wearing a deerskin when he was mistaken as deer and was shot with an arrow in the foot by Jara. Further it is said that Lord Krishna was then cremated at Dehotsarga at the Triveni Ghat. In the memory of Lord Shree Krishna, there is a Tulsi tree also which is planted here. These days the Central Government of India is taking care and also looking after the development of this shrine. This shrine was built by the God of Moon, using gold. Every year thousands of pilgrims visit this place to seek blessings of Lord Krishna.
- Ahalyabai Temple: Ahalyabai temple is also close by The Somnath Temple, which was built by the queen mother Shri Ahalyabai Holker during 1782. In this temple people had maintained the Pooja Parampara of Bhagvan Shiva during the hostile political conditions.
- Veneshwar Mahadev Temple: - This temple is located in front of Somnath Dharmshala Gate, this temple is one of the most ancient structure in Somnath dating back to the dark days of the twelfth century, a very interesting story is behind this name of the temple Veneshwar, when Mahmud Ghazni attacked Somnath, the King of Vaja was not ready to surrender and decided to fight against the invasion of Mahmud Ghazni, the muslim generals planned to abduct the daughter of King Vaja (Veni) who worshipped the linga everyday when they attacked this temple Veni locked herself inside the temple and surrendered herself to Lord Shiva and then the miracle happened, it is said that the shiva linga divided into to parts and Veni was taken inside it. Since then the there is an impression of her hair that was felt out as well as the mark of the linga splitting open which is visible to our eye, this is how Mahmud's plan failed. After this miraculous event took place this temple was named as the "Veneshwar Mahadev Temple".
